Lindy is hot! The
Lindy revival of the 1980s has survived Y2K and become more than a few
dancers scattered around the world. Now there are tens of thousands of
dancers who have taken the Lindy Hop of the 1930s and made it their own.
It flies. It glides. It recaptures the exuberance that was driven by the
ballroom bands. And it is visceral in a way only another dancer can
understand.
It rivals the U.S.'s other swing styles - which all grew out of it - in
growth. Because daily, more swing bands get together. And daily, teens and
adults and the young at heart are more and more captivated by the strains
of swing music.
In the 1990s it was the hep sound of swing that resurrected zoot suits,
swing skirts and vintage dress. Those first swingkids didn't dance. They
started to walk-the-walk and talk-the-talk, so eventually they had to
dance. Because once they'd collected re-mastered CDs, they began to collect
videos that showed swing dancing.
Now enrapt, competitive couples and those jammin' for fun fly through the
air with their hearts in their mouths dancing with the same innovative
spirit that fueled earlier generations. (Paulette
